Since google wave ate etherpad and then sadly died, there wasn’t anything quite like this on the web. Now there is. Handy stuff: instant/lightweight collaborative online text editing. You don’t even have to sign up to use it.
Ah, from the etherpad.org page there are now a few resurrected etherpads up too. http://piratepad.net looks like a good one. So, a few options for instant/lightweight collaborative online text editing. Useful.
